Petrela Castle sits on a rocky hilltop 15 kilometres south of Tirana, and from its battlements you can see the entire Erzen River valley spread out like a green carpet toward the Adriatic. The castle was part of Skanderbeg chain of defensive fortifications in the 15th century – Petrela was controlled by his sister Mamica – and signals were relayed from here to Kruje via fire beacons when Ottoman forces were spotted. The walls are partially restored, the tower is intact, and the setting is genuinely dramatic: a wedge of stone jutting from a wooded hill, with a single restaurant occupying what was once the garrison courtyard.
Petrela is Tirana easiest half-day castle escape. The road is good, the drive is short, and the restaurant – Restaurant Petrela – is one of the better castle-dining experiences in central Albania, serving grilled lamb, mountain trout, and local wine on a terrace that hangs over the valley.

How to Get There
From Tirana centre, drive south on the SH3 toward Elbasan. After roughly 10 kilometres, take the right turn signed for Petrela. Follow the winding paved road up the hill for another 5 kilometres. Park at the base of the castle in the free lot. A 5-minute walk uphill on a cobbled path brings you to the castle gate. No public transport serves Petrela directly. A taxi from Tirana costs roughly 1,500 to 2,000 LEK round-trip with waiting time.
What to See and Do
- Explore the castle: The keep and walls are free to enter and unfenced. Walk the battlements for Erzen Valley views. The tower interior is empty but atmospheric.
- Eat at Restaurant Petrela: The castle restaurant serves grilled lamb, mountain trout, byrek, and local wine on a terrace over the valley. 800 to 1,200 LEK per meal. Cash and card.
- Hike the Erzen Valley: A trail descends from the castle into the Erzen River canyon below. The river is swimmable in summer and there are several flat picnic spots on the bank. 30 minutes down.
- Sunset visit: The castle faces west and the sunset over the valley is the best reason to come. The restaurant stays open until late in summer.
