The Llogara Pass is the dramatic gateway to the Albanian Riviera. Heading south from Vlore, the SH8 climbs 40 km through increasingly spectacular mountain scenery, passing through traditional villages before reaching the summit at 1,027m. The pass marks the transition from the Adriatic to the Ionian coast. After the summit, the descent to Dhermi (20 km) reveals sweeping views of the turquoise Ionian Sea and the Riviera coastline. Where to Go After Llogara

Dhermi (20 km south, 25 min): The descent from 1,027m through pine forests to the coast is one of Europe’s most dramatic approaches to a beach. Dhermi’s main beach has vibrant summer clubs; Drymades offers a quieter backpacker scene. The hillside old village with its 16th-century church contrasts beautifully with the buzzing beach below.

Vlore (40 km north, 40 min): Albania’s Independence City with a 4 km palm-lined Lungomare promenade and the Muradie Mosque designed by Ottoman master architect Mimar Sinan. Museum of Independence documents the 1912 declaration. Excellent base for boat trips to the Karaburun Peninsula.

Himare (40 km south, 45 min): A relaxed horseshoe bay with the medieval Kastro old town 200m above the beach. Porto Palermo Castle, a triangular Ali Pasha fortress, is 10 minutes further south. Quieter and more family-oriented than Dhermi.

Karaburun Peninsula (boat access): Pristine marine wilderness with the massive Haxhi Ali sea cave, secluded snorkeling coves, and centuries-old sailor inscriptions at Grama Bay. Dolphins frequently spotted. No road access keeps the beaches uncrowded.
