How to Get to Shkoder

By Ferry: Komani Lake ferry to Fierze connects Shkoder with Valbona and Theth via a spectacular 3-hour journey through mountain gorges.

Best Time to Visit Shkoder

April – June and September – October: Best weather with comfortable temperatures and green landscapes. Ideal for cycling, hiking, and the Komani ferry.

July – August: Hot but perfect for lake activities. The city is lively with summer events and the pedestrian boulevard is packed each evening.

November – March: Cold with possible snow. The Komani ferry operates year-round but on a reduced schedule. Access to Theth and Valbona may be limited by snow.

Shkoder Road Trip Route Advisor

Shkoder is an easy 1.5-hour drive north from Tirana on the SH1 highway. The road is in good condition and well-signposted. From Shkoder, the dramatic road to Komani Lake (50 km, 1.5 hours) winds through mountain villages before reaching the ferry terminal. For Montenegro, the Hani i Hotit border crossing is 20 km north of the city and is generally fast. The road to Theth branches off at Koplik towards Boge and climbs into the Albanian Alps on a narrow but recently paved road.

Where to Go After Shkoder

Komani Lake Ferry to Valbona (1.5 hr drive + 3 hr ferry): Widely considered one of the world’s most beautiful ferry journeys through sheer mountain gorges evoking Norwegian fjords. The ferry threads a flooded river valley with 100m rock walls. From Fierze, minibuses connect to Valbona Valley (45 min) for the start of the famous Valbona-Theth trek.

Theth National Park (3.5 hours by road): Remote Alpine valley with stone kulla towers used for blood feuds, the Grunas Waterfall (45 min walk), and the Blue Eye of Theth natural pool in a rocky gorge (3 hr round-trip hike). The newly paved road via Boge is accessible to regular cars. Guesthouses operate half-board with mountain cuisine.

Ulcinj, Montenegro (45 min via Sukobin border): Montenegro’s southernmost coastal town with an Albanian-majority population. Stari Grad old town on a rocky peninsula, 13 km sandy Velika Plaza beach, and the Ada Bojana river island. Quick border crossing. EU citizens enter Montenegro visa-free.

Kruje (85 km south, 1.5 hours): Skanderbeg’s hilltop fortress with the national hero’s museum and a 400-year-old Ottoman bazaar selling handmade carpets, filigree jewelry, and copperware.
