View from Llogara Pass on a self-drive route along the Albanian Riviera

There is no better way to discover Albania than behind the wheel. The country’s compact size, improving road infrastructure, and extraordinary diversity of landscapes make it one of Europe’s most rewarding self-drive destinations. This 10-day road trip itinerary is designed for independent travelers who want to explore at their own pace.

Start in Tirana, where the capital’s energy provides an exciting introduction. Skanderbeg Square, the BunkArt museums, and the Blloku district fill your first day. A morning trip to Kruje, Skanderbeg’s legendary hilltop fortress, adds historical depth before you head south. The drive to Berat takes 2.5 hours through the agricultural heartland of central Albania.

Berat is essential. The UNESCO-listed Ottoman city demands at least a full day to explore the castle quarter, the Mangalem neighborhood with its iconic window-covered facades, and the excellent Onufri Museum. Local wineries offer tastings of indigenous grape varieties in the surrounding hills. From Berat, the scenic drive to Gjirokaster through the Osum valley takes 2.5 hours with mountain views throughout.

Gjirokaster is Berat’s stone-built UNESCO sister. The massive castle, the restored cobblestone bazaar, and the Zekate House tower provide a full day of exploration. The drive south passes the Blue Eye spring before reaching Saranda on the Ionian coast. The sunset promenade and Lekuresi Castle are the evening highlights.

The Riviera stretch from Saranda to Vlore is the scenic climax. Butrint National Park, the Ksamil Islands, and the coastal drive through Himare and Dhermi fill three unforgettable days. The Llogara Pass climb to 1,027 meters rewards with panoramic views. Apollonia Archaeological Park near Fier and the return to Tirana complete the loop. Total driving distance is approximately 800 kilometers over 10 days, with the most dramatic section being the coastal SH8 between Vlore and Saranda. Download offline maps before departing as mountain areas have limited mobile signal.
