The stretch of Albanian coastline between Saranda and Himare packs more beauty, history, and authentic experiences into 100 kilometers than most countries offer in their entirety. This 4-day beach itinerary focuses on the southern half of the Albanian Riviera, combining UNESCO archaeology, turquoise island beaches, dramatic canyon coves, and traditional coastal villages.
Begin in Saranda, the Riviera’s largest city. The horseshoe-shaped bay is lined with a palm-tree promenade that comes alive each evening with the traditional xhiro, the cherished Albanian ritual of walking, coffee-drinking, and socializing. Lekuresi Castle, a 16th-century fortress perched above the city, offers the best sunset views on the entire coast, with a panorama that takes in Saranda Bay, the Ksamil Islands, and the Greek island of Corfu. The castle restaurant serves traditional food and drinks on an open terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea.
Spend your first full day at Ksamil, just 15 kilometers south. Four uninhabited islands sit in water of such vivid turquoise that it rivals the Caribbean. Pedal boats, available for around EUR 15 per half-day, let you island-hop at your own pace. The main beach is sandy and family-friendly with a gradual entry ideal for children. Beachfront seafood restaurants serve the morning’s catch grilled simply with olive oil, lemon, and herbs. In peak summer, arrive before 10 AM to secure a sunbed as the beaches fill quickly.
Butrint National Park, 18 kilometers south of Saranda, is a must. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans 2,500 years of Mediterranean history. The Greek theatre from the 3rd century BC, the Roman forum and bath complex, the 6th-century Byzantine baptistery with its exquisite mosaic floor, and the Venetian castle at the hilltop create a journey through civilizations. The entire site is set within protected wetlands that serve as a bird sanctuary.
Drive north along the coastal SH8 road. Porto Palermo Castle, a triangular fortress built by Ali Pasha, sits on a small peninsula with a beautiful swimming bay. Himare offers two distinct areas: Spile Beach on the waterfront with tavernas and sunbeds, and the medieval Kastro old town perched 200 meters above. The walk up to Kastro at sunset, through stone alleys and past Byzantine churches, is one of the Riviera’s essential experiences. If time allows, continue to Gjipe Beach, a dramatic canyon cove accessible by a 30-minute hike or boat taxi, completing a perfect Riviera short break.
