Preze Castle is a 15th-century hilltop fortress that commands one of the widest panoramas of any castle in Albania: a 270-degree sweep from the Adriatic coast in the west to the Dajti massif in the east, with Tirana urban sprawl filling the plain below. The castle itself is small – a restored tower, a stretch of defensive wall, and a courtyard restaurant – but the view is genuinely staggering, especially at sunset when the mountains turn purple and the city lights begin to flicker on.
The castle was another node in Skanderbeg defensive network, controlled by a trusted ally, and it changed hands several times during the Ottoman era. Today it is owned by a local family who run the restaurant and maintain the tower. The vibe is less formal than Petrela and the views are arguably better. It is 20 kilometres northwest of Tirana, a 30-minute drive from the centre.

How to Get There
From Tirana, drive northwest on the SH2 toward Durres. Exit at Vore and follow the signs for Preze village. The castle is on the hill above the village, accessible via a narrow but paved road. Parking is free in front of the castle gate. No public transport reaches Preze. A taxi from Tirana costs roughly 2,000 to 2,500 LEK round-trip.
What to See and Do
- Climb the tower: The restored tower is open to visitors. The roof platform has the best view in central Albania. Free entry; the restaurant owner may ask if you would like tea or coffee.
- Sunset dinner: The castle restaurant serves traditional Albanian food – tavë kosi, grilled meats, local wine – on a terrace with that view. 700 to 1,200 LEK per meal. Cash preferred.
- Walk the walls: The short stretch of defensive wall surrounding the tower can be walked in 5 minutes. Good for photos.

- The restaurant can be closed on weekdays in winter. Call ahead or visit on weekends.
