Librazhd is a small town in eastern Albania, halfway between Elbasan and Pogradec on the SH3 highway, wedged between the Shkumbin River and the western slopes of the Shebenik-Jabllanice National Park. The town is a practical transit stop, but the surrounding national park is the real draw: 34,000 hectares of mountain forest, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and one of the last remaining populations of the Balkan lynx, one of Europe rarest mammals.
Shebenik-Jabllanice is one of Albania least-visited national parks, lacking the infrastructure and fame of Theth or Valbona. The hiking trails are rough and unsigned, the guesthouses are basic, and the rewards are solitude and raw, undeveloped mountain scenery. The Rrajca meadows, a high plateau of wildflowers and grazing horses at 1,500 metres, are the most accessible entry point from Librazhd. The town itself has a riverside promenade, a few cafes, and a market selling local honey and mountain cheese.
