Corovode, Albania

Corovode is the main town of the Skrapar district, a small highland settlement on the Osum River roughly 40 kilometres east of Berat. The town is the primary access point for the Osumi Canyon, one of Albania most dramatic natural wonders, and serves as the base for rafting operators who run trips through the gorge in spring. Corovode itself is a quiet, functional mountain town with a central square, a few cafes, and a market where local farmers sell Skrapar famed mountain honey and rakia.

The town is modest, but its position at the head of the Osumi Canyon makes it strategically important for adventure tourism in southern Albania. The canyon walls rise up to 100 metres in places, and the river cuts through limestone in a series of rapids, waterfalls, and deep green pools. Rafting season runs from April to June when spring snowmelt provides sufficient water levels. Outside rafting season, the canyon can be explored via hiking trails along the rim.
