Cerem, Albania

Cerem is a remote village in the Valbona Valley, beyond Dragobi, at the very end of the unpaved road that runs through the valley. It sits at roughly 1,100 metres, surrounded by alpine meadows, beech forest, and the highest peaks of the Prokletije range. The village is a trailhead for several serious hiking routes, including the traverse to the Curraj valley and the ascent of Maja e Jezereces. It is the kind of place where the road ends and the wilderness begins.

Cerem is not a village in the conventional sense. It has perhaps 10 inhabited houses, a single guesthouse, and no services beyond the hospitality of the families who live there. It is a base for mountaineers, not a tourist destination. The surrounding landscape is raw and high-altitude, with wildflower meadows in June and July, grazing cattle, and the constant sound of water from the multiple streams that feed the Valbona River.
