Skanderbeg Square in Tirana during a three-day Albania itinerary

Shen Gjergj is a small village in the hills above Tirana, roughly 20 kilometres east of the city, named after the medieval Church of Saint George that still stands on the village edge. The village is a popular weekend escape for Tirana residents, offering fresh mountain air, traditional food, and views across the Dajti massif. The road from Tirana winds up through pine forest and offers increasingly dramatic city views before reaching the village plateau.

The Church of Saint George dates from the 15th century and is one of the oldest surviving churches in the Tirana region. It was partially destroyed during the communist era and has been restored in recent years. The village has several restaurants specialising in traditional Albanian mountain cuisine – slow-cooked lamb, fresh dairy, and wood-fired bread – and the terraces offer cool relief from Tirana summer heat.
