Golem is the stretch of Adriatic coast that Tirana floods every Friday afternoon between June and September. It runs for roughly 6 kilometres south of Durres, a continuous ribbon of sandy beach lined with hotels, apartment blocks, beach bars, and umbrella franchises so dense they look like a colour-field painting from the road. This is not a hidden cove or a wild Riviera escape. Golem is mass tourism, Albanian-style: loud, sociable, and genuinely fun if you embrace it for what it is.
The infrastructure has improved dramatically since the 2010s. The beach is regularly cleaned, the promenade is well-maintained, and there are now several genuinely good seafood restaurants mixed in with the pizzerias and fast-food kiosks. The water is shallow and sandy-bottomed for the first 30 metres, making it safe for children. The downside is that the Adriatic here carries sediment, so visibility is limited compared to the Ionian coast.

How to Get There
From Tirana, drive west on the SH2 toward Durres, then south on the SH4. The drive takes 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Parking is available at most hotels and in paid lots along the beach road (200 to 300 LEK per day). Public buses depart from Tirana Regional Bus Terminal every 30 minutes in summer for roughly 150 LEK. A taxi from central Tirana costs 2,000 to 2,500 LEK.
What to See and Do
- Beach day at Golem Plazh: Sunbeds cost 400 to 600 LEK depending on the section. The central stretch is busiest. Walk south for more space.
- Beach clubs at Mali i Robit: The stretch between Golem and Mali i Robit has several beach clubs with DJs, pool access, and higher-end dining. Sunbeds from 800 LEK.
- Sunset promenade walk: The paved promenade runs the full length of Golem. Walk it at sunset when the temperature drops and the beach empties.
