Fushe Arrez is a small mountain town in the Puke district of northern Albania, at roughly 600 metres elevation, surrounded by dense pine and beech forests, river gorges, and traditional villages that feel untouched by the 21st century. The town sits on the edge of the Albanian Alps and serves as a quieter, less-visited base for exploring the northern highlands than Shkoder or Puke. The surrounding landscape is crisscrossed by old mule tracks and walking trails, and the air is cool and clean even in midsummer.
The area has a history of copper mining, but today the main draw is the natural setting: the Fani River valley, the forested slopes of the Malesia e Madhe foothills, and the stone villages of the surrounding region. Fushe Arrez itself has a small centre with a few cafes, a market, and a surprisingly good regional restaurant. It is the kind of place where the waiter will sit down at your table to explain the menu because there are not enough customers to keep him busy.

How to Get There
From Shkoder, drive east toward Puke. At Puke, continue south for another 20 minutes to Fushe Arrez. The road is paved all the way. Free parking in town. No public transport serves the town directly. A taxi from Shkoder costs 3,500 to 4,500 LEK.
What to See and Do
- Walk the Fani River trail: a rough but scenic footpath follows the river downstream from the bridge east of town. The swimming holes are about a 20-minute walk in.
- Visit the surrounding villages: Kryezi, Iballes, and Mertur are traditional stone settlements in the hills above town. Hire a local driver if you do not have a 4×4.
- Eat at the local restaurant in the town centre: grilled river trout, mountain cheese, and rakia made from local plums. 500 to 700 LEK per meal. Cash only.
