Zogaj is a small lakeside village on the eastern shore of Lake Shkoder, roughly 15 kilometres south of the city. It is more remote and less developed than Shiroke, reached by a narrow paved road that winds through wetland reed beds and small farming hamlets. The village has a single restaurant built over the lake, a small pebble beach, and a view of the Albanian Alps that is, if anything, more dramatic than Shiroke because the mountains are closer here and the light hits them directly at sunset.
Zogaj is where Shkoder locals go when Shiroke is too busy and they want a longer, quieter lake experience. The swimming is better here too – the water is cleaner further from the city, and the pebbles give way to a sandy bottom in places. The drive through the wetlands from Shkoder is part of the experience, passing through a landscape of water channels, grazing buffalo, and cormorants drying their wings on fence posts.

How to Get There
From Shkoder, drive south on the road toward the Montenegro border. After roughly 10 kilometres, take the signed right turn for Zogaj. The road is narrow but paved. Free parking near the lake shore. No public transport. A taxi from Shkoder costs 1,500 to 2,000 LEK.
What to See and Do
- Swim in the lake from the Zogaj beach. The water is clean and shallow for the first 20 metres.
- Eat at the lakeside restaurant: grilled lake fish, carp soup, and local white wine on a terrace over the water. 500 to 800 LEK.
- Walk the lake shore past the village into the reed beds. The birdlife is abundant year-round.
