Vau i Dejes is a small town 15 kilometres southeast of Shkoder, best known for the hydroelectric dam and reservoir of the same name that supplies power to much of northern Albania. The dam created a large artificial lake, Lake Vau i Dejes, which has become an unlikely recreational area with several waterfront restaurants and cafes. The town itself is unremarkable, a product of the communist industrial era, but the lake setting – surrounded by low forested hills with the Albanian Alps visible in the distance – is pleasant and unexpected.
The lake is the main draw. Several restaurants have built terraces directly over the water serving grilled lake fish, and there are a few spots where locals swim from the shore. It is not a beach destination, but it is a good place for a lakeside lunch and a break from the road if you are driving between Shkoder and Puke or Kukes.

How to Get There
From Shkoder, drive southeast on the road toward Puke. Vau i Dejes is signed after roughly 15 kilometres. Free parking at the lakefront restaurants. No public transport directly to the lake. A taxi from Shkoder costs 1,000 to 1,500 LEK.
What to See and Do
- Eat grilled lake fish at a waterfront restaurant. The terraces over the water are the main attraction.
- Walk the dam. The view across the reservoir to the distant Alps is impressive, especially in the morning.
- Swim from the lake shore at a few informal spots. The water is clean but cold, even in summer.
The Insider Checklist
- Cash preferred at lakefront restaurants. ATMs in Shkoder or Puke.
- The lake water is cold year-round due to the depth of the reservoir. A quick dip, not a leisurely swim.
- Combine with a visit to the Mrizi i Zanave agritourism complex in Fishte, 20 minutes south.
