Gjipe is not a beach you stumble upon. It is a beach you earn. The only way in is a 30-minute hike down a steep, unshaded canyon trail, or a boat taxi from Dhermi or Jale. What waits at the bottom is the most dramatic swimming hole on the Albanian coast: a narrow slash of white pebbles wedged between 70-metre limestone cliffs, fed by a cold-water canyon stream that cuts through the sand and into the sea.
The beach itself is only about 120 metres long. On a busy day, perhaps 80 people share it. On a quiet day, you might see five. There is a single seasonal bar selling cold drinks from a cooler. There is no road, no parking lot, no sunbed franchise. Gjipe is what the Riviera looked like before the coastal highway was built.
Gjipe sits roughly midway between Dhermi and Jale on the Ionian coast, tucked into a canyon that is invisible from the SH8. The turnoff is a dirt track about 2 kilometres south of the Dhermi village junction.

How to Get There
By car and hike: From the SH8, take the unsigned dirt track roughly 2 kilometres south of Dhermi village center, past the Dhermi junction. Follow it for about 1.5 kilometres past olive groves until it ends at a gravel parking area. From there, a marked trail descends through the canyon. It takes 25 to 35 minutes going down; 40 to 50 minutes climbing back up. Wear decent shoes. No flip-flops. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person in summer.
By boat: From Dhermi Beach or Jale, local boatmen run informal taxi services to Gjipe for approximately 1,500 LEK per person round-trip. Negotiate the return pickup time before departing.
What to See and Do
- Cliff jumping: The northern cliff face has several ledges at 4, 7, and 12 metres. Locals jump from the highest ledge. Check water depth before jumping; it changes after heavy rain.
- Canyon pools: Walk upstream from the beach along the stream bed. Within five minutes you will find the first natural pool, deep enough to submerge. The second pool, another five minutes up, is larger and completely hidden from the beach.
- Wild camping: Camping on the beach is tolerated but not officially sanctioned. Bring everything you need: tent, water, food, toilet paper. Pack out all waste.
- Snorkel the canyon mouth: Where the cold stream water meets the sea, the temperature contrast attracts fish. Visibility is excellent in the morning.
The Insider Checklist
- There is nothing at Gjipe except a seasonal drinks cooler. Bring all water, food, and sun protection.
- Do not hike the canyon trail between 12:00 and 16:00 in July or August. The walls radiate heat and there is zero shade.
- If arriving by boat, confirm the pickup time and pay half upfront. Phone signal is nonexistent in the canyon.
- The beach faces southwest. Direct sun from roughly 10:00 until 18:00. Bring an umbrella or accept that you will roast.
- Check the weather forecast. The canyon stream can flash-flood after heavy rain inland, even if the coast is sunny.
