The Cape of Rodon is a narrow limestone finger that juts 7 kilometres into the Adriatic from the central Albanian coast, halfway between Durres and Lezhe. At its tip sits the fortress of Skanderbeg, built in 1451 as the national hero final coastal defence against the Ottomans. The castle walls are crumbling, overtaken by wild fennel and sea lavender, but the setting – a rocky headland battered by turquoise surf with views stretching to Montenegro on clear days – is worth the rough drive alone.

This is not a swimming beach in the Riviera sense. The shore is jagged limestone, with only a few small pebble coves. But what the cape lacks in sand it makes up for in raw, windswept solitude. On a weekday outside July and August, you are likely to share the entire headland with a shepherd, his goats, and the ghosts of 15th-century soldiers.

Kepi i Rodonit sits roughly 50 kilometres north of Durres and 25 kilometres south of Lezhe, at the end of a deteriorating road through the coastal hills.

Feature Details

Ideal Months April to June and September to October; the cape is exposed and windy in winter

The Secret Factor A short walk north of the fortress, hidden behind a screen of pines, sits the ruined Church of Saint Anthony. The apse is intact, the altar stone is still in place, and the view from the church doorway frames the Adriatic perfectly. Almost no one finds it

How to Get There

From Durres, drive north on the SH2 highway toward Lezhe. Exit at Mamurras and follow signs for Kepi i Rodonit. The last 8 kilometres after the village of Shetaj are unpaved: a mix of compacted dirt, loose gravel, and occasional washboard. A 2WD car can manage it in dry conditions at 15 to 20 kilometres per hour. After heavy rain, the road becomes muddy and deeply rutted. Parking is an informal dirt clearing near the fortress gate. Free. No public transport reaches the cape. A taxi from Durres costs roughly 3,000 to 4,000 LEK round-trip with waiting time.
