Ballsh is a small industrial town in southern Albania, roughly 25 kilometres east of Fier, known primarily for the Ballsh oil refinery that dominates the local economy and skyline. It is not a tourist town, but the surrounding hills contain significant archaeological remains of the ancient Illyrian city of Byllis, one of the most important Illyrian sites in Albania, which sits on a plateau 10 kilometres east of Ballsh. The town itself is a practical transit point for visiting Byllis and the surrounding Mallakaster region.
The Mallakaster hills around Ballsh are a landscape of olive groves, limestone outcrops, and traditional villages that have escaped the coastal development. The region was a centre of the Illyrian kingdom before the Roman conquest, and the Byllis archaeological park preserves the remains of a city that thrived between the 4th century BC and the 6th century AD. The theatre, the city walls, and the basilica are all partially excavated and set in a wildflower meadow with views across the Vjosa valley.
