Kolonje, Albania

Kolonje is a highland district in southeastern Albania, with Erseke as its main town. The region is one of the most remote and least-visited parts of the country, characterised by pine-covered mountains, traditional stone villages, and the looming presence of the Gramos massif on the Greek border. Kolonje was a centre of the Albanian national awakening in the 19th century, and several villages in the district have well-preserved Orthodox churches with frescoes dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Gramos mountains dominate the skyline and offer serious hiking, including a multi-day traverse of the border ridge. The villages of the Kolonje district – including Borove, Lengarice, and Proger – are traditional stone settlements that have changed little in a century. The region also has several natural thermal springs, including the Benje baths near Permet in the neighbouring district.
