Konispol, Albania

Konispol is Albania southernmost town, sitting on a plateau 350 metres above sea level just 1 kilometre from the Greek border. It is the administrative centre of the Albanian Chameria region and a place of quiet, understated significance: the Cham Albanian community, many of whom were expelled from northern Greece after the Second World War, consider this area their ancestral homeland. The town has a sleepy atmosphere, a small central square, and views stretching across the plain to the Greek island of Corfu.

Konispol is unlikely to appear on any Riviera itinerary, but for travellers who want to understand the complex cross-border history of the region, it is worth the 30-kilometre drive south from Saranda. The nearby Shushice River valley has several caves with prehistoric archaeology, and the border landscape is a mix of olive groves, abandoned military bunkers, and the distant blue of the Ionian Sea.
