Koplik is a small town 18 kilometres north of Shkoder, the administrative centre of the Malesia e Madhe district, and the gateway to the Albanian Alps. Most travellers pass through Koplik without stopping, hurrying toward Theth, Valbona, or the Lake Koman ferry. That is a mistake, or at least a missed opportunity. Koplik has a genuine highland market town atmosphere, a handful of good restaurants serving mountain cuisine, and a position on the edge of the Adriatic plain with views of the Prokletije massif rising like a wall to the north.
The town is modest – concrete buildings, a central square, a market street – but it is authentically Albanian in a way that Shkoder, for all its charm, is too cosmopolitan to match. The surrounding Malesia e Madhe region is one of the most traditionally Albanian parts of the country, a stronghold of the Kanun and the Catholic highland clans. Koplik is where the mountains begin, and the air changes perceptibly as you leave the coastal plain behind.

How to Get There
From Shkoder, drive north on the main road toward the Montenegro border. Koplik is 18 kilometres and clearly signed. Buses and furgons run regularly from Shkoder (100 LEK). Free parking in the town centre. A taxi from Shkoder costs 1,000 to 1,500 LEK.

- Walk the town centre for a genuine Albanian highland market town without tourist infrastructure.
