The Lake Koman ferry is widely considered one of the most spectacular boat journeys in Europe. The lake itself is a 1970s hydroelectric reservoir, but the setting – a narrow, fjord-like gorge of near-vertical limestone cliffs plunging into emerald-green water – looks like something northern Norway misplaced in the Balkans. The ferry takes 2.5 hours from the Koman dam to Fierze, threading through cliffs that rise 300 metres on either side, past isolated farmsteads accessible only by boat, and under rock walls so sheer that the ferry horn echoes back three times.
The ferry is a working transport vessel, not a tourist cruise. It carries locals, livestock, sacks of grain, and the occasional car. You sit where you find space – on the deck, on the roof, against a crate of vegetables. The trip from Koman to Fierze is the gateway to the Valbona Valley and the Albanian Alps. Taking the ferry, hiking from Valbona to Theth over the pass, and then driving out to Shkoder is the classic 3-day northern Albania circuit.

How to Get There
The Lake Koman ferry departs from the Koman dam, roughly 50 kilometres northeast of Shkoder. The drive from Shkoder takes 1.5 to 2 hours on a narrow, winding but fully paved road. From Tirana, drive to Shkoder first (1.5 hours), then follow the signs to Koman. The car park at the dam is free. The passenger ferry costs 500 to 700 LEK. A car ferry also runs (approximately 2,500 LEK for a vehicle). The ferry departs once daily in low season and twice in summer. Check the schedule locally; it changes seasonally and is not reliably posted online. Arrive 45 minutes before departure to secure a spot.
What to See and Do
- Ride the ferry: The 2.5-hour journey is the attraction. Bring snacks, water, a windproof layer, and a camera. The roof is the best seat.
- Hike Valbona to Theth: From Fierze, take a minibus to Valbona village (30 minutes, 300 LEK). Next day, hike the Valbona Pass to Theth (6 to 8 hours). This is the classic northern Albania trek.
- Stay in a guesthouse: Both Valbona and Theth have traditional stone guesthouses with home-cooked meals. Book ahead in July and August. Expect to pay 2,500 to 3,500 LEK per person for dinner, bed, and breakfast.
- Visit Shala River: A smaller boat taxi from Koman takes you up the Shala River, a tributary with absurdly clear turquoise water. Day-trip operators at the dam charge roughly 1,500 LEK for the round trip.
