Leskovik, Albania

Leskovik is a small highland town in southeastern Albania, 20 kilometres from the Greek border, at roughly 900 metres elevation in the foothills of the Gramos mountains. It was once a significant Ottoman trading centre on the route between Ioannina and Korce, but today it is a quiet settlement of perhaps 1,500 people, surrounded by pine forests and mountain meadows. The town has a scattering of Ottoman-era stone houses, a central square with a few cafes, and a palpable sense of being at the edge of things.

The main draw is the surrounding Gramos mountain landscape: wild, undeveloped, and crossed by old mule tracks that connect the border villages. The Gramos massif rises to over 2,500 metres on the Greek border, and the hiking here is as dramatic as anything in the Albanian Alps, but with none of the infrastructure or visitor numbers. Leskovik is the logical base for exploring this remote corner of Albania.
