Libohove, Albania

Libohove is a small town 20 kilometres south of Gjirokaster, nestled in the Drino Valley at the foot of the Bureto mountain. It was a stronghold of the Libohova family, one of the most powerful Albanian dynasties of the Ottoman era, and the town still bears their architectural imprint: a 18th-century fortress, several Ottoman-era houses with carved stone facades, and the monumental plane tree in the central square planted by Ali Pasha himself to mark the birth of his sister Shanisha, who married into the Libohova clan.

The Libohove Fortress, built in the 1790s, dominates the town from a hilltop and offers views down the Drino Valley toward Gjirokaster. The fortress is largely intact, free to enter, and almost never visited. Below it, the town has a quiet, slightly melancholic atmosphere, with cobbled streets, a few traditional cafes, and the sense of a place that was once important and now waits quietly for its history to be rediscovered.
