Lure, Albania

Lure is a remote highland region in the Diber district of eastern Albania, known for its glacial lakes, dense pine forests, and near-total absence of tourist infrastructure. The Lure Lakes are seven small glacial pools scattered across a high plateau at roughly 1,200 metres, surrounded by old-growth Macedonian pine. In summer the meadows bloom with wildflowers. In autumn the forest turns gold. The area was once a national park, then lost its protected status, then regained it as part of the Korab-Koritnik Nature Park. The result is a landscape of extraordinary beauty with minimal visitor management and even fewer visitors.

Ideal Months June to September; the road is impassable in winter and spring mud

The Secret Factor The largest of the seven lakes, Liqeni i Lures, has a small island that you can reach by swimming. The water is cold and clear, and the island has a single pine tree that makes for a surreal swimming destination

How to Get There

From Peshkopi, take the unpaved road north toward Lure. It is rough, unsigned in sections, and requires a 4×4 or a high-clearance vehicle. The drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Hiking trails connect the lakes once you reach the plateau. No public transport. There is no reliable taxi service to the lakes. Hire a driver in Peshkopi who knows the route.

The Insider Checklist

  • Zero facilities. Bring all water, food, and camping gear if staying overnight.
  • 4×4 is not optional. The road is genuinely rough.
  • Phone signal is nonexistent. Download offline maps and inform someone of your plan.
  • Wild camping is tolerated. Leave no trace.
  • The best light for photos is early morning when the lakes are glass-flat.
