Mesopotam, Albania

Mesopotam is a small village 10 kilometres inland from Saranda, on the road toward Gjirokaster, and its main landmark is the 10th-century Monastery of Saint Nicholas, one of the oldest surviving Byzantine churches in Albania. The monastery is a sturdy stone structure built in the cross-in-square plan typical of middle Byzantine architecture, surrounded by olive groves and a village that has grown around it. The interior frescoes are largely lost, but the architecture is compelling and the setting is peaceful.

The monastery is unusual in that it combines elements of both Byzantine and local Albanian construction techniques. The stonework alternates between dressed limestone and brick, creating a striped effect on the exterior walls. The surrounding village is agricultural, with olive and citrus groves and a single cafe near the monastery gate. It is a good stop on the drive between Saranda and the Blue Eye spring, 10 kilometres further east.
