Polican is a small town in southern Albania, 25 kilometres northeast of Berat on the road to Corovode and the Skrapar district. It was built as an industrial centre during the communist era to manufacture weapons and ammunition, a purpose that gave it strategic importance and, after the fall of communism, a difficult transition. Today the town is partially deindustrialised, with a mix of abandoned factory buildings, residential blocks, and a modest commercial centre serving the surrounding agricultural villages.
Polican is not a tourist destination, but it is an interesting stop on the route from Berat to the Osumi Canyon for those interested in Albania communist industrial heritage. The derelict factory buildings on the edge of town – massive concrete structures slowly being reclaimed by vegetation – are a stark and strangely compelling reminder of the country industrial past. The nearby Tomorr Mountain, one of southern Albania sacred peaks, rises to the east and offers hiking opportunities.
