Where to Stay in Theth

Theth is a remote Alpine village within Theth National Park, not a town with neighborhoods but distinct landmarks:

  • Theth Village Center: The heart of the valley with the iconic stone kulla (lock-in tower) used for blood feuds, the small village church, traditional stone houses, and a handful of guesthouses and small restaurants.
  • Grunas Waterfall: A 25m waterfall 45 minutes on foot from the village center, reached through a forested trail. The pool at its base is swimmable in summer (very cold water).
  • Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kalter i Thethit): A stunning natural pool with vivid blue water, 3-hour round-trip hike from the village, set in a dramatic rocky gorge.
  • Valbona Pass Trailhead: The start of the famous Theth-to-Valbona hiking trail, a 6-8 hour trek considered one of the Balkans’ best day hikes.
  • Bujtina Polia: Modern mountain guesthouse with en-suite rooms, excellent home-cooked meals, and stunning valley views. Doubles from EUR 35/night (half-board).
  • Guesthouse Gjelaj: Traditional family-run stone guesthouse in the village center with a garden, homemade food, and fire pit. Doubles from EUR 25/night (half-board).
  • Vila Gurra: Comfortable guesthouse with private bathrooms, a terrace restaurant, and valley panorama. Doubles from EUR 30/night (half-board).

From Shkoder: 3.5 hours by 4×4 or sturdy vehicle via the recently paved road through Boge. The road was fully paved in 2021 and is now accessible to regular cars in good weather. Summer minibuses run from Shkoder (4 hours).

From Valbona: On foot via the Valbona Pass trail (6-8 hours, July-October only). This is the classic Alpine trek.

Best Time to Visit Theth

May – June and October: The valley is accessible by car and guesthouses are open. The pass trek may not be possible due to snow, but local hikes to the waterfall and Blue Eye are available. Quieter and greener.

November – April: Snow closes the road access and most guesthouses. Not recommended for tourists.
